a small gloat

Well, okay. Not a particularly small gloat.

Now let's see if the Democrats can *do* something in the House of Representatives.

Colorado [where I live] will have a Democrat for governor. My guy in the House of Representatives will be staying there, which means three of the four guys in Congress who are brothers [and Democrats, of course] are there because I voted for them. [Two Salazars, one Levin.]

And it looks like we're going to have a woman as Speaker of the House for the first time. Ta DA!

Which brings me to my favorite political anecdote. [I have very few, so there's no need to be worried.]

This is a story about Sam Rayburn. Mr. Rayburn was a Democrat from Texas and he was in the House of Representatives from 1913 until he died late in 1961. He was Speaker of the House several times, which is how I always think about him.

Anyway, I have a friend whose father went to DC for the first time in 1960 as part of the staff of Edith Green, a Democrat from Oregon. One of the things Jim noticed was that every time he saw the Capitol, he got a little thrill. [If you've ever been in DC, you'll know what I mean. There's just something about it.] So one day he asked Edith Green [who had been in the House since 1955] a question.

"How long do you have to be in Washington before you stop getting that little thrill every time you see the Capitol?" he asked.

"I don't know," she said. "It hasn't happened to me yet."

And one day she happened to be talking to Sam Rayburn. And she said, "One of my new staffers asked me how long you have to be in Washington before you stop getting that little thrill every time you see the Capitol, and I couldn't tell him, because it hasn't happened to me yet. So how long *does* it take before you stop getting that little thrill every time you see the Capitol?"

"I don't know," said Sam Rayburn. It hasn't happened to me yet."

I sat on the steps for a while, one day when my train had a layover there. It was pretty sweet.
