Gainful Employment

I've been planning to write an entry about the horrors of looking for a job. I *hate* job-hunting. But I've been thwarted.

I've been hired.

In fact, I started working Thursday morning, so it's been two whole days now. It doesn't pay much, but there will be health benefits eventually, which loom large in the life of one who is composed entirely of expensive "pre-existing conditions."

I didn't actually realize until I was telling an old friend about my success that everybody is probably going to get a giggle out of this: I'm working as a Customer Service Representative [fancy name for One-Who-Answers-the-Phones and office dogsbody] for the local Roto-Rooter franchise.

Well, I'm learning lots and lots about how plumbing and drains work. It's really interesting. And the office is _wonderful_. When conditions are right, there are three large dogs lying around in various attitudes of repose. I don't have to dress up. [Customers for a drain and sewer service do not drop in. They call.] It's out in the country with good views. The people who used to own the business -- the present owner's parents -- live in the most fantastic earth-sheltered passive solar house. Anyway, it looks like it just might work. Of course, I haven't actually had to take a call yet; I'm still being trained. We'll see ....
